Why Travel is Cheaper for Youths
High school and college students have a distinct advantage. No, it is not their youthful vigor; it is their opportunity to travel the world at a significant discount from almost any other age group.
Students get discounted travel rates on buses, trains and airplanes. They are more likely to stay at a hostel than a hotel or resort, and even when they do make this choice, they tend to be offered discounts for these locations as well. They even get lower prices on museum entrance fees and city transportation systems as well.
Where are these students heading? Interestingly, today’s young people are interested in far more than a week at the beach. They are participating in volunteer/vacations with youth organizations around the world. They are also making trips to some of the most interesting cities in order to take in the sights for themselves.
Where can they find discounted travel packages and ideas? It is really quite amazing to take a look at the opportunities for those currently engaged in educational pursuits. There are grants and scholarships, work arrangements and internships that can take a student around the globe. There is also the opportunity presented by spring break, but even here, trends are changing. Instead of the sunny shores of Florida or the ski resorts of California, many students are heading to extremely exotic destinations. For example, Thailand is one location that keeps appearing on many student “top ten” lists.
Not all travel by students will be independently undertaken, and group tours are still one of the more traditional ways for high school and college kids to have an educational adventure.
To find the right travel option a current student needs to assess what the purpose of the journey will be – is it purely for fun? Is there an educational component? Does it have something to do with their future plans or career? Do they want to provide labor or serve in an intern capacity? The answers to each of these questions can create a different solution. A student interested in study or work abroad should visit their guidance counselor in order to get information. If the travel is strictly for pleasure, they should try to find at least one friend to accompany them, especially to a far or tropical location. Should the journey be as part of a group experience they can either cooperate with their school or a local agency, or they might want to investigate their options on the Internet.
