What to Expect from Cheap Hotels and Hostels
Cheap hotels and hostels provide an option for those who are more concerned with experiencing their vacation destination than with being put up in a luxury hotel. These are particularly popular with young people and students who oftentimes visit locations such as Europe and travel about by foot, taking in as much of the destination as possible in their allotted time. Before one takes this option, there are some things they should keep in mind about their accommodations and for which they should make preparations.
Cheap hotels tend to have compromises that may not be acceptable to certain travelers. Shared bathrooms are a very common compromise, especially in Europe. While private bathrooms are generally an expectation in the US, other nations consider this a luxury and guests who check into the least-expensive hotels may find themselves showering with strangers or waiting in line to make use of the facilities. While this is not enormously inconvenient, it may be so unusual to those accustomed to having their own, private baths that it makes a stay at a cheap hotel rather unpleasant and, unfortunately, it may detract from one's enjoyment of the trip overall.
Cheap hostels are the least luxurious of all accommodations. In these facilities, one not only shares their bath but also shares their room with other individuals. These facilities are usually only frequented by students and those who truly enjoy roughing it. Of course, the rates are incredibly low and they do provide a great way to meet fellow travelers from all over the world. One must take into account the particular challenges presented by lodging in such facilities, however, and make certain that they prepare adequately.
In cheap hostels, one must make certain that they secure all of their belongings against theft. While most travelers are perfectly normal people, there will be some who will take advantage of the fact that, when one is in a foreign land, they are a natural choice in victims for theft. Travel documents, in particular, must be closely guarded and should always be kept on one's person. Some hostels do have a safe deposit box which guests can use to store their most valuable possessions and, if one is travelling with currency, placing that currency and one's passport in such a location is a good idea. Otherwise, it should be kept close to one's body, especially when one happens to be sleeping.
